Full Description: Join SMH Consultants as a Construction Observer!
SMH has an opportunity for a talented and skilled Construction Observer to join our team in the Dodge City, Kansas office. You’ll oversee and perform general construction and field observation on KDOT partied transportation projects, ensuring compliance with plans and specifications.
What You'll Do:
You’ll be at the heart of construction projects, ensuring quality and compliance with project plans
• Construction and Field Observation: Oversee and perform construction observation on KDOT and other civil engineering projects, ensuring the work meets the required specifications and quality standards. Your role will involve reviewing and interpreting construction plans, tracking contractor progress, and documenting key project details such as weather conditions and completed quantities.
• Quality Assurance and Testing: Conduct materials testing for soils, concrete, and asphalt to ensure compliance with project specifications. You’ll be responsible for measuring installed work items, performing necessary calculations, and ensuring that the construction aligns with design standards.
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records and complete
construction reports using Microsoft products and AASHTOWare. You will also address and report any design compliance issues with contractors to keep the project on track.

What We're Looking For:
We’re looking for a motivated individual that’s committed to providing high-quality work. The candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and have a valid driver’s license.
• KDOT/Construction Knowledge: Candidate should be knowledgeable of KDOT testing
procedures and ability to pass the required certification exams for a KDOT Certified Engineering Inspector. You should be able to interpret KDOT plans and specification to ensure projects align with required standards. Training provided.
• Technical Expertise and Skills: The ideal candidate will be able to quickly learn concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and testing procedures, with training provided. A strong willingness to embrace new technology and processes to improve work efficiency is essential. You should also possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with good technical writing abilities. Additionally, you must be self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently while demonstrating leadership, initiative, and flexibility.
• Physical and Travel Considerations: This role requires the ability to work in varying weather conditions and be exposed to outdoor work hazards, such as heavy equipment, pollutants, toxic waste, electrical risks, and vibration. You must be prepared to work 10+ hour days with overnight travel and weekends if needed, and be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including KDOT FRA testing.
• Experience: At least 2 years of experience in the design or construction industry. High school diploma or equivalent required. We also provide training in KDOT testing procedures and other required knowledge.
